GCFLearnFree.org launches a brand new tutorial on Windows Live, Microsoft's online suite of productivity and communication tools.

On Tuesday, we added our first tutorial on Windows Live, Microsoft’s online suite of productivity and communication tools. If you read this blog or use our site often, you’ve probably heard us talk about using the Cloud to share and store files online. (If not, Jessica’s explanation of cloud computing is a good place to start.) Windows Live is one way to do that. And since it’s a Windows product, it integrates well with tools you might already use, like Hotmail, Messenger, and the Microsoft Office programs. The result of all this is that Windows Live can be a really useful way to do a wide range of online tasks– from sending emails and instant messages, to uploading and editing files online– with one simple set of tools.

This tutorial, Windows Live Account, is an overview of the Windows Live basics. It covers topics like creating an account and managing your privacy. Over the next few months, we’ll be adding two more tutorials to help you get more out of Windows Live: a tutorial on Messenger, the popular Windows Live chat service, and a tutorial on Office Web Apps. Office Web Apps are free, online versions of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OneNote. The Web Apps can be very useful if you don’t have the Office programs installed on your computer, so we’re excited to teach you how to use them soon. (In the meantime, you can learn more about Web Apps by checking out this post Mia wrote a while back.)

Until then, why not get started by checking out our Windows Live Account tutorial? As always, we’d love to hear what you think. If you already use Windows Live, which features do you find yourself using the most? Are there any features you’re having a hard time figuring out? And for those of you who haven’t used Windows Live yet, do you plan on giving it a try?

Download our newest iPhone app, GCF Word 2010 Tutorial, for free.

A few weeks ago, we announced that we had launched our first mobile app, GCF Vocabulary Videos. We are pleased to announce that the second of our mobile applications, Word 2010 Tutorial, is now available for download on iTunes for iPhone and iTouch users. Like all of our programs, this app is free.

Below are a few images from our app. Go to iTunes – GCF Word 2010 Tutorial to download it for free.

Based on our popular tutorials available at GCFLearnFree.org, Word 2010 Tutorial App guides you through the new features of 2010. The app explores program basics and common tasks, and even delves deeper to help the user work with more complex features (Now you can finally get the hang of the dreaded mail merge!).

The app includes more than 25 tutorial videos. As these videos are screencasts, they do not show very well on older models, so unfortunately only users with iPhone 4 will be able to see these. Even if you have an older model, we encourage you to still download the app as you will still receive the textual information and informative graphics.

We’re excited by the response we’ve had to the GCF Vocabulary Videos app and we think this app will be even more popular. The next app we hope to launch will be a Microsoft Excel 2010 Tutorial, available by the beginning of April. We are continuing to work on versions of our apps for Android and iPad users.

Do you think you would use this application and/or do you think this application would be useful in your life?

We have just launched our first mobile app, GCF Vocabulary Videos, giving users even more opportunity to learn from anywhere at anytime.

We have just launched our first mobile app, a video dictionary developed from our Reading Program, entitled GCF Vocabulary Videos. The app is free and available for download on iTunes for iPhone and iPod Touch users. This will be the first of several apps we are developing for mobile use. It includes 400 vocabulary videos that allow users to learn and practice some of the most common words used in the English language. In each video, learners will be able to hear, view and comprehend vocabulary on their own time from anywhere. It’s perfect for adult and English-language learners.

Below are a few images from our app. Go to iTunes – GCF Vocabulary Videos to download it for free.

Next up we plan to launch mobile app versions of our popular Office 2010 tutorials. We hope to have a Microsoft Word 2010 app available by the end of February. In addition, we will be working on versions of our apps for Android and iPad users.

We hope you look forward to having even more freedom to learn when you want and how you want with our new mobile apps. Check back often for additional updates.
