Meet the Staff: Steven

All of our staff members are important but at the end of the day, for GCFLearnFree.org to be the site you know and love, it has to work! Our very talented web developer, Steven, is the person that makes it all possible but making sure the site is easy to navigate and always running smoothly.

What led you to working at GCFLearnFree.org?
“I studied computer science at NC State University, planning to pursue a career in web development. Just prior to graduating, one of my advisors mentioned a position that was available at GCFLearnFree.org and asked if anyone was interested. After looking more into the organization and its mission, I thought that it would be a great fit for what I was hoping to do. I started my job here one week after graduating from NC State.”

What project are you most proud of while working here?
“I have been fortunate to work on many terrific projects in my time here, but I am most proud of the most recent site redesign. The design team put a lot of thought into every aspect of the site to make sure it was as intuitive, flexible, and user-friendly as possible and I feel like it was a great team effort. There were some very unique development challenges that I had to tackle in order to make the site as simple as we wanted it to be for users, and I enjoyed the ingenuity and creativeness that was required by that process.”

What is your favorite thing about working at GCFLearnFree.org?
“My favorite thing about working here is knowing that people are able to use what we produce to improve their lives. I think it is very important that people never stop learning and challenging themselves to do new things, and I love that I am able to spend my time in a way that assists people in achieving their goals.”

What’s one thing you wish people knew about GCFLearnFree.org?
“One thing that I was surprised to find out is that GCFLearnFree.org is fully self-supportive and does not rely on any government support. I think it is a great example of how individual communities can provide important services for other people simply through taking initiative and being innovative, rather than simply relying on government to provide those services.”

If you were given a chance to travel to the past, where would you go and specifically why?
“I would travel back to mid-19th century America. I am fascinated by the adventure and growth of the time period, as well as the ambition and determination of the people who lived during that time. I also would love to experience what the world was like without all of the modern technology that surrounds us today.”

The next time you are using the free educational content on GCFLearnFree.org and are able to quickly navigate from page to page, open a video in your browser, and print off a lesson, just thank Steven for his hard work in making it all possible!

  2. I’m glad your there although I’ve learned almost everything you teach years !! ago it is nice to go to your site and refresh and even learn something I missed. thanks !

  3. Hi! I LOVE your site. I am learning things MS programs I would otherwise have to pay for and drive to! Awesome!!

I do have a suggestion for you to mull over. Many people with ASD (especially Asperger’s) use Social Stories to learn specific ways to behave properly in certain social situations. I think your site could be a wonderful resource for them as well, if you were to offer some social stories type lessons.

Thanks for what you do! It’s a big help.
