Dealing with Everyday Life

We take the situations we encounter each day for granted. You awake, get dressed and ready for work or school and maneuver rush hour traffic or read a bus schedule to get to your final destination. During the day you may run errands by making a deposit at the bank, picking up a prescription, shop for groceries and cook dinner, and sit down to pay bills at the end of the day.  For many people, these events are just the small, mundane activities that make up our lives. But for more than 44 million Americans, these seemingly small tasks can seem like impossible and daunting challenges.

The Everyday Life project

The Everyday Life project uses interactive, situation-based lessons to teach functional literacy skills. Each activity provides learners with the opportunity to test their knowledge of real-world situations and to develop the confidence and skills necessary to be successful in everyday life.

From tasks like grill safety and counting pills to completing a job application and filling out a time sheet, the Everyday Life Project provides videos and interactives that can help learners at the Basic level. Although the activities have been created with adult-themes, younger learners can also benefit from lessons like reading food labels, telling time and counting change.

The interactives are actually pretty fun and the illustrations are wonderfully done.  I especially like the lesson on picking up a prescription and measuring food.

Educators are encouraged to utilize the content found in Everyday Life. Literacy tutors, administrators, and adult basic education providers can refer learners to our site to work independently or use modules as a supplement to their teaching materials. Our site provides learners with the ability to track their progress through the lessons and to repeat activities as often as they wish.

  1. Those are actually very nicely done. I like the relaxed pace and even the art style is sort of soothing. I believe these could really be helpful for a lot of people.
