Did you know that there are services that can help you file your taxes online for free? Before you spend valuable money on expensive tax services, you should check out the free programs that are available.

TurboTax Freedom Edition

To try and help families with low to moderate incomes on their tax returns, the IRS has joined with TurboTax through the Intuit Tax Freedom Project to provide free e-filing services for federal taxes of qualifying families.

In order to qualify, you must meet at least one of the following requirements in 2010:

  • Earned an Adjusted Gross Income of $31,000 or less
  • Served in the Military, Reserves or National Guard
  • Qualified for the Earned Income Credit

In addition, it allows taxpayers in the below listed states to also file their state taxes for free:

AL, AR, AZ, GA, IA, ID, KY, MI, MN, MO, MS, NY, NC, ND, OK, OR, RI,SC, VA, VT, and WV.

IRS FreeFile

Free File provides free federal tax preparation and e-file options for all taxpayers through a partnership between the IRS and commercial tax software companies. If your adjusted gross income is $58,000 or less then you can use brand-name software to do your taxes for free. If your income is more, you can still use the Free File Fillable Forms to file your taxes.

Free File provides you with step-by-step filing guidance and allows you to transmit your return electronically for quicker turnaround. Check out the below video and go to freefile.irs.gov to learn more.
