Every year I say the same thing….this year I’m going to get healthy, lose weight, and get in shape. I’m not alone. Many people make getting in shape their New Year’s resolution. Here are a few of my gym tips!

Allison’s gym tips:

Rock out!- I have an iPod and it really helps me get through my workouts. I created a Gym playlist that I listen to each time I work out. It makes an hour feel like 30 minutes! I don’t like working out with the ear buds that come with most mp3 players because they never stay in my ears.  Nike makes a really nice pair of ear phones that go behind your ear. They’re adjustable, comfortable, and more importantly they stay in place while your working out!

What to wear - Any breathable cotton works for me! I suggest that you try on the clothes before you buy them. They may look nice on the rack but make sure they are comfortable and you can move around in them.

Take the tour-Most gyms give you a tour, provide an overview of the machines, and offer one free personal training session. Take advantage of all three! Taking a tour of the gym will assure that you know your way around and it gives you time to evaluate the facility. Look for things like clean locker rooms, child care areas, free towel service, water fountains, and updated and working equipment.  Knowing how the equipment works will ensure that you are using the machines safely and it will boost your confidence. When I know how a piece of equipment works, I’m more inclined to get on it and use it. The free training session that some gyms provide is just a sample of what a one on one work out session may include. Most of the time they don’t personalize the training session for your specific needs during the free session so make sure you ask plenty of questions. You need to know key things like how long you should work out each day/week, how to measure your heart rate, how much weight should you lift, and how the machines work.
